ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS OF SINGLE AND COMBINED CRUDE EXTRACTS OF SYNADENIUM GLAUCESCENS AND COMMIPHORA SWYNNERTONII

Background: Synadenium glaucescens and Commiphora swynnertonii are among the reported plants used traditionally for treatment of bacterial infections. This study reports antibacterial effects single combined extracts from leaves, stem root barks glaucescens. Materials Methods: Plants were collected Manyara Njombe regions in Tanzania. Extraction was done using dichloromethane methanol. The assessed activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus Enterococcus faecalis) Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) determined by broth microdilution, while Fractional Concentration (FIC) indices calculated MIC values to determine combination effects. Results: Strong activities demonstrated all S. (MIC 0.011-0.375mg/mL) methanol C. 0.047-0.375mg/mL). Synergistic effect observed when combining bark with leaves (∑FIC 0.5), Other synergistic E. faecalis (FIC index 0.3). For remaining combinations, mainly additive observed. Conclusion: on different plant parts suggesting that it could be beneficial combine such purposes.
